about us

how it started

My name’s Gavin and I’m an iron-a-holic.

about gavin

I am a hobbyist, preservationist, and a collector more than I am a business person. I enjoy the process more than making a profit. Making a profit on a piece is nice, and allows for me to continue doing this thing, but it isn’t my primary motivation.

how it started

I cook a lot, and have since I went off to college at 17. I taught myself how to feed myself at a pretty young age. For as much experimentation I have done in the kitchen, I have always found cast iron intimidating. There seem to be so many rules, and everyone has their own rules for their cast iron pans. I had always thought it is best to just stay away from cast iron altogether. Several years ago, that changed.

My girlfriend and I were talking about cooking and at some point I probably mentioned that I wanted to learn how to cook in cast iron. She then surprised me with a skillet! It was just a modern Lodge, and it needed cleaning and some rust removal, so I went online and poked around, looking for how exactly to clean one of these things. As anyone in the cast iron world can tell you, there is a LOT of bad information online. There is a lot of good and useful information, too, but it can be hard for a newbie to learn what is bad and what is good. I made a lot of mistakes early on, but I learned from them.

passion over business

I fell in love with the process. I fell in love with learning about these pieces and their manufacturers. I’ve also made some good friends who share my love of cast iron.

It took about a year for me to learn the best ways to restore cast iron, and to acquire the necessary equipment. Since then, I have restored hundreds of pieces of cast iron cookware, and I’m still going strong.

I do not really run things like a business. This is still a hobby for me. I shy away from deadlines and pressure, because if I were to adhere to those rules, it would take the fun out of things for me. So, if you’re here because you’d like me to restore some cast iron for you, I can likely help, but please know that my restoration schedule is not a rigid thing, and is subject to whatever else is going on in my life.
